Categories

Categories help you separate your life into different spheres so that you can keep from getting overwhelmed when you look at everything in your life you have to do. Categories are a quick and easy tagging system for grouping projects together. This can help you keep your private life out of your work life and vice versa because you can filter your view of items by category.

To create a new category hover over the Configure menu and select Categories. Then click on the create new category link at the bottom of the list. By default, there are two categories-- Personal and Professional.

Categories may be edited or deleted by clicking on any available category on the Configure -> Categories screen.

Delete a category by clicking the checkbox to the right of the form and then clicking the Update button. When deleting a category, you have the opportunity to assign all items to a new category by choosing the desired category's radio button prior to clicking the Update button.

You may change the category to which an individual item is assigned on that item's editing screen.

Hints and Suggestions

I use categories such as "Client Projects", "Incoming Projects", "Marketing" etc. This means I can easily filter to see only the current in-progress projects that are client-facing, or take a quick look at how many leads or prospects have gotten to the point of actually discussing a project with me, but have not gone all the way through the contract process yet. I use these projects to track whether I need to write up a proposal, or I've gotten to the point where I'm just waiting on the prospect to come up with the dough. crisses
I use only three global categories: Home, Personal, and Professional. Since I make use of Goals and higher-order associations, I can quickly find related projects and actions using item reports for these higher-order items, and using the filter bar at the top of the item list screens. My whole life is in GTD-PHP, and this high-level categorization helps me keep my personal and professional lives separate without causing data fragmentation. scott
